Challenges

Sea turtle inside the ocean

Ocean Buddies

Welcome to our Ocean Buddies challenge. If you participate in our September activity, you will help your favorite marine animals even if you don't live near an ocean!

Follow the steps below and don't forget to check out and share with your friends the 'Ocean Buddies Guide', prepared by The Ocean Foundation

Here is your challenge:

1) Think of your 3 favorite marine animals and write their names on a piece of paper. For ideas, see pictures of marine animals.

2a) If you live near an ocean or went to the beach this summer:
  • Go out to the water and find your favorite animals

  • Take a picture or draw them. You can use the pictures you took during your summer vacation!

Wave 2b) If you didn’t go to the beach this summer, that’s ok!:
  • Keep the list of your favorite marine animals with you. Have you ever seen one in person before?

  • Do you have any animals that are similar to those on the list in your own backyard? (Birds, freshwater turtles, snails, fish)

  • Draw your favorite marine animal

3) Go outside and help your animals by using the 'Ocean Buddies Guide' and "Why Marine Animals Get Sick", in the box to the right.

4) Don't forget to share the 'Ocean Buddies Guide' with your family and friends

5) On Backyard Jungle, create your Ocean Backyard, and upload a Discovery for each of your favorite marine animals, with its picture and the story of what you did to help them

6) Find some other kids' Ocean Backyards and vote for your favorites!

Did you know?

Three-quarters of the Earth's surface is covered with water. 97% of all water on Earth is saltwater.

Why Marine Animals Get Sick?

1. Cleaning products: Many products to clean houses contain toxic chemicals that end up in streams, rivers, and eventually the ocean. Use natural products to clean (baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, and water).

2. Air pollution: Greenhouse gases produced by cars, trucks, SUV's, are a key factor in global warminng. Climate change is hurting the ocean by increasing water levels, water temperatures, and storms. Talk to your parents about driving fuel-efficient cars, car pooling, and using public transit.

3. Garbage in storm drains: Excess waters from rainstorms are flushed into rivers, bays and the ocean through storm drains. Garbage thrown on the street or directly in storm drains is very harmful to marine animals and the ocean.
