Challenges

Become an Ornithologist!

What's an ornithologist? An ornithologist is a scientist who studies birds. This month, volunteers all around the world will help ornithologists by participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count.

Here's what you can do to help:

  1. Pick one of the following days: Friday, February 17; Saturday, February 18; Sunday February 19; Monday, February 20.
  2. Go to the library and check out a field guide for identifying birds.
  3. Print out this data sheet to record your information.
  4. On your chosen day, you must spend at least 15 minutes looking for birds. Record which species of birds you see and the highest number that you see at one time.
  5. Draw or take pictures of the birds you see. Then go to Backyard Jungle http://pbskids.org/backyardjungle/ and add them to your backyard.
  6. Finally, enter your information on the Great Backyard Bird Count page. Ask a parent or teacher to help you. There is more information for them on the parent's & teacher's page.

Thanks for your help! The information you provide will help ornithologists to learn more about birds.
